Open Source Blueprint for large scale self-organizing cloud environments for IoT Applications

The Internet-of-things (IoT) stands for networks of interconnected devices pursuing a common objective (service) and exchanging data. The Internet-of-Things (IoT) is being considered as an integral component of the Future Internet (FI) and therefore should be smoothly integrated within easy-adaptive Internet service delivery models and utility-based cloud computing paradigms. Despite recent advances in the IoT area for developing control systems, the proliferation of inter-connected entities and the collection of diverse information act as big challenges in order to provide full control over IoT devices. Solutions to the problem of formulating and managing internet-connected objects in cloud environments i.e. environments comprising “entities” and resources (such as sensors, actuators and smart devices) by using cloud infrastructures are under investigation and still at early stage of development.
OpenIoT investigates the efficient ways to formulate and manage IoT based cloud environments i.e. environments comprising IoT “entities” and resources (such as sensors, actuators and smart devices) and offering utility-based (i.e. pay-as-you-go) IoT services.
OpenIoT is perceived as a natural extension to cloud computing implementations, which will allow access to additional and increasingly important IoT based resources and capabilities. In particular, OpenIoT will research and provide the means for formulating and managing environments comprising IoT resources, which can deliver on-demand utility IoT services such as Sensing as a Service as an example. OpenIoT is pertinent to a wide range of interrelated scientific and technological areas spanning: (a) Middleware for sensors and sensor networks, (b) Ontologies, semantic models and annotations for representing internet-connected objects, along with semantic open-linked data techniques (c) Cloud/Utility computing, including utility based security and privacy schemes.
OpenIoT is a joint effort of prominent open source contributors towards enabling a new range of open large scale intelligent IoT (Internet-of- things) applications according to a utility cloud computing delivery model.
